Bly.

Hope meubels is onnodig.

Stay.

Die Groenhuis consists of 3 guest houses, all within walking distance from each other. You can choose from Die Groenhuis., Die Stal. and Baby se Huis.

Halfway.

Our carefully restored Karoo townhouses, the oldest of which dates back to 1890, can accommodate up to 20 guests in en-suite bedrooms. Die Groenhuis is a perfect halfway house between Gauteng and the Cape. The quiet road (R717) from Colesberg via Philippolis to Trompsburg provides a shorter route than the N1.

A most pleasant, unforgettable sleepover. We will tell a select few
of our friends to make the trip
into your delightful piece of the
‘Old Free State’.

About us.

They say it can be a blessing to not know what the future holds. Sometimes however, the opposite should hold true, as was to be discovered by Jens Friis Snr.

Jens Friis Snr committed himself to a full restoration of Die Groenhuis in 2003. In what was to become a labour of love, he painstakingly rejuvinated and rebuilt the then storage accomodation into Die Groenhuis. Having no access to electricity or even running water the restoration of the accomodation was arduous and consumed plenty of time, money, art and much patience on the part of Jens Friis. Despite the ups and downs of the build, you will find the quality of the end result more than speaks for itself.

The original wooden floors, ceilings and windows have been preserved as far as possible, lending an incredible sense of warmth to Die Groenhuis. A family friend from Jagersfontein, Mr. Manie Barkhuizen assisted with the restoration of the windows. The refurbished ceiling is insulated by pages out of 1940s Huisgenoot magazines.

Our ensuite rooms have as standard luxurious innerspring mattresses wrapped with crisp, fresh, white linen and two of our rooms are fully air-conditioned.

Unwind.

Die Groenhuis is situated on the edge of town and evokes memories of being on a farm. Enjoy a late afternoon stroll and don't be surprised if you come across peacocks, buffalos and even rhinos roaming the land! Olden-day flowers such as roses add to the calm atmosphere and spirit of Die Groenhuis. Relax on the wooden bench nestled on the stoep and savour the stunning view of the Karoo with its "koppies". Walk barefoot in our garden taking in the lusciously green grass and smell the sweet aroma of our pear and lemon trees who are always grateful for the area's sporadic rainfall. The irrigation reservoir has been stripped of its koi carp by overzealous feeding by the local stalks. When the rains come in January, the Vaaljapie (tractor) from 1956 will be used to prepare the vegatable garden for the new growing season.
